As the first FEMA house on its street, the first floor of Water 1 needed to be 5 ft. above the surrounding homes while still maintaining a connection to the water. A graduated sequence to the water was created to achieve the desired connection between water and house. The array of pausing places includes an upper “gallery” deck, level with the house, a lower fire pit court, a lower bbq patio, and finally a “green belt” at the lowest level, close to the water. The graduated outdoor spaces create a graceful connection between the interior of the home and the water of the lagoon, ultimately leading down to the waterfront.
